The majority of states require you to have auto insurance and proof of it all the time. In general, even though you do not get into an accident, your license can get suspended, you can get fines, or even face jail time. For example, you are driving in your own car that is uninsured and you were involved in an accident. If you were not at-fault and the other driver that hit you is insured, you can possibly obtain money from the insurance company of the at-fault driver. If the other driver is uninsured, you may sue the person for compensation. But remember, the state laws have limitations to the kind of expenses that you can get if you have no insurance while driving in that case. If You Are The Cause Of The Car Accident
For the majority of states, your insurer will pay for the costs of injury and damages of the victims. But, if you have no auto insurance, you may face a lawsuit if the victims decide to sue you. There are no-fault insurance states, wherein they follow a different process. Regardless of who is at fault of the accident, drivers can file a claim using their own insurance. When it comes to minor injuries, the victims may take legal actions against you for medical costs. When the injuries and damages are serious, it depends on the rules of each state regarding the legal action allowed. If you are considered at-fault in the accident, the victims can demand compensation and can go for several of your assets such as your future paychecks, a part of your earnings, or your house. When You Drive Without Proof Of Insurance You will face two separate violations if you cannot prove you have insurance and if you do not have one. The penalties you may face vary, depending on the state you reside in. If you are insured but fail to show proof of your insurance, the penalties are less severe compared to being uninsured. Make sure to provide proof of insurance within a given timeframe. Conclusion Failure to buy auto insurance can potentially cost you a lot if you get involved in a major accident. Thanks for pointing out that the state laws can have limitations when it comes to the kind of expenses that we can get from the insurance. I guess it would be best to talk to a car insurance specialist to know my coverage once I get my own car next year. As of now, I am still saving up for this purchase, and I plan to gift myself on my birthday with a car and the right insurance for it.
